To instill in children the 3R's of conservation i.e Reduce, Recycle and Reuse.

Prevent air-pollution caused by the burning of waste paper.

To expose  the young minds to the scope of innovation and experimentation in everyday life situations.


After having attended the one day workshop on innovation and experimentation at KV Kanjikode,I was looking out for a suitable topic to innovate upon. As one of the resource persons had suggested, I tried to identify some problem area related to the school premises and felt that creation of waste paper is an inevitable menace in the everyday teaching-learning process. . I was committed to reduce the generation of waste paper and wanted to recycle the waste paper so that millions of trees that are cut for the purpose are saved. So I, along with like minded colleagues  decided to do our little bit to reduce this menace and save the trees.

Our principal, not only appreciated the idea but also gave clear-cut instructions and valuable inputs at every stage; widening our insights into the scope of further innovations on finer aspects such as making files/folders etc.

Preparatory work and experimentation

Following the instructions  and guidance  of our principal. After a survey of literature I, along with Mrs Bini Anil(PRT) and Mr Sreekumar(Art teacher) formulated a procedure by trial and error.

A paper shredding machine was available in the Vidyalaya office.

Initially a kitchen flour- sieve was used for trial as a make-shift paper mould. A  mould and deckle set was later  made from the window -mesh intended for keeping away mosquitoes.

A mixer was used to make paper pulp.


OBSERVATION-It was felt that the paper was too thick and had too fluffy a texture.

REMEDIATION-. In order to improve upon this , it was decided that a paper compressing machine be devised. Several innovative models were suggested and finally a low cost design was decided upon.

A low cost roller and pressing machine was designed and we got it made in a local workshop. We also experimented on how to increase the strength of paper and give better texture and colour to the paper using natural materials like extracts from leaves of hibiscus and flowers of different plants. Involving teachers from work experience and art department and children of classes IV to VII.

OBSERVATION-The paper made with this was thinner but, it was seen to be tearing at certain places . 

On further study, it was learnt that adding a" Formation-Aid" like the viscous Aloe-Vera juice or sliced lady's finger rinsed water  to the pulp could possibly remediate this.

REMEDIATION-In Kerala, traditionally women use the hibiscus leaves' Thalli' as a hair rinser.This being viscous and similar in consistency, we thought about using this.(bhindi and aloe-Vera being costly/scarce)It proved to be a good substitute.

OBSERVATION-While the roller -machine could compress a stack of dry sheets it was found inappropriate in compressing the wet sheet .Hence, another model with two metal sheets has been designed. 




Venue-Primary Resource room.


As suggested by the principal, students of classes IV,V,VI and VII who are observed to be creating more waste-paper in the class rooms are being  engaged in this project.

Time- Work-experience periods  are being   utilised for making the pulp and moulding it. Saturdays are being used for out- door drying of the hand- made paper.Interested children were  given an opportunity to try out their innovations  as a leisure-time activity even during  autumn break.Winter break and summer vacation too can be utilised for such innovative and creative works for the really interested children.

The Principal,enlightening the students about the plant fibre,cellulose and the science of paper making.


1.Now  we  aim to expand this project with an improvised paper pulp making machine in place of the kitchen mixer we  are currently using so that large bulk of waste paper could be recycled and not even a bit of paper is burned in the  campus.

 2. Yet another idea is ,Experimenting with  Banana fibre and other  possible raw materials. Designing paper bags etc.

To give regular exposure to the students to the world outside the system. 

To develop listening and public speaking skill.

To prune and develop communication and pronunciation skills.

To provide a platform to hesitant students to explore their innate talents and to remove their stage fright.

To utilize leisure time in a constructive manner. 


As a follow-up of the workshop conducted on 20.08.2015 at KV Kanjikode, our principal Mrs. Maya George motivated all the teachers of KV INS Dronacharya to undertake a project on any innovative idea for the common good of the children of the Vidyalaya.

I felt that many gifted children avoided the stage just because of the stage fright. I wanted to give them an alternative platform where they could perform behind the screen and gain the confidence to face an audience on stage. Thus, I thought of utilizing the PA system of the Vidyalaya installed in the library for providing the students such stage which can remove their stage fright. Hence, it was decided to commence “Vidyalaya Radio Station- DRONAVAANI”.

Preparatory work 

After taking permission for the commencement of the project ‘Vidyalaya Radio Station- Dronavaani’ from the principal madam  we  ascertained the  availability of the required resources at the school level In order to execute the project. The provisions made for the same are as follows:

Discussion with Mr. Hari kumar (T.G.T SUPW) regarding the functioning of the PA system of the school. 

Discussion with Mrs. Molly (Librarian) regarding space to be utilized for the broadcast of ‘Dronavaani’ in the library.

Enlisting the target students  who possess caliber but are somehow getting hindered in the expression of the same due to stage fright was done  with the help of all English teachers (T.G.Ts).

Formation of a Students’ Committee for the conduct of Vidyalaya Radio Station-‘Dronavaani’.


Execution of the project


After an elaborate discussion with the students committee the first episode of Dronavaani was broadcasted On 12/10/2015, Monday. The Dronavaani broadcast has been controlled from the Station Control Room i.e. school library (as the PA system is installed there). The control room activities were run invariably by the students committee monitored by Mr. Hitesh Kumar Sharma, PRT (Project I/C). The programme was broadcast  during lunch break (from 11:30am to 12:00 noon) on all Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays i.e. thrice  a week. The students, who intended to take part, got their names registered in the programme-chart planned and maintained by the students committee. A variety of programmes were listed and broadcast  like- weather update, news update, patriotic songs, community songs, devotional songs, teachers’ talk, students’ talk, story narration, quiz programmes, debates, interviews, today in history, feedback programme etc.


Based on the suggestions received from the panel inspection team, principal madam, teachers and students various changes were made in the blue print for the conduct of broadcast of Dronavaani. 

A structured format for the execution was developed where in, programmes were to be presented class wise on weekly basis. This ensured competition and improvement in the performance of the children of the same age group.  

A group of four teachers evaluate the presentation of the students on some specified criteria and the best performer is awarded during the morning assembly after a span of three weeks (by the time all sections of the concerned class would have performed during their respective turns). 

Limitations/difficulties/problems observed and the resolutions: 

Poor  sound quality of the speakers installed- 

 It was seen that the broadcast of the VIdyalaya Radio Station got affected by the poor sound quality of the speakers. The matter was brought to the attention of principal madam. As per her advice, Mr. Hari kumar T.G.T SUPW made the provisions to resolve the problem.

Less time for having food for the performing students

 As the time for the broadcast of the programme was scheduled from 11:30 am to 12:00 noon (thirty minutes), students were having difficulty in having their food. For the resolution of this problem timing of the broadcast was changed. The new timing of the broadcast is from 11:35 am to 11:50 am (fifteen minutes).



From the students perspective

 After having performed behind the screen inhibited students were able to express themselves on the stage with confidence.

Scholastic and  Co-scholastic performance

Linguistic abilities of the students who took part in the broadcast of Dronavaani improved to a great extent as they constantly write and rewrite the scripts for the presentations. Vocabulary and writing skills of the children were seen to be improving. FA-4 grades mirrored their improvement in the co-scholastic sphere. 


It was generally felt that the noise-level during the break-time was brought down as children got interested in listening to some of the wonderful programmes. 

Future plan of action

Taking into the consideration the response from the students, it is planned to extend the broadcast on all the six working days of the week. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for the primary section and Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays for the secondary and senior secondary sections.  

3.  Ceiling on your desires  - charity programme: Care &Share

The ambitious project ’ek mutti chawal ek mutti dal’ launched in the Vidyalaya could help in distributing bags of rice and dal to needy houses in the nearby locality. Once in two months, students who had gone to these houses found it difficult to hide their tears when they saw the miserable conditions of the people. They also visited Asha Bhawan, Cochin to distribute the cloths collected from the students of the Vidyalaya. 

The staff and students believe that no one becomes poor by giving. The universe is an abundant source of resources which is to be shared with all.



The club members have collected money, purchased medicines and blankets for the tribal people of Wayand and handed it over to Smt. Riji, Co-ordinator of Tribal welfare.


Club members visited the slum areas of Pandikudy, Koovapadam ,Chullikkal  and distributed Onam kit containing rice dal greengram and pappad. They visited the St George School and distributed book pencil bag and rice. Club members visited cancer ward of Ernakulam General Hospital purchased medicine for the patients. They presented group songs and Instrumental song in the cancer ward which was highly appreciated by the Hospital Authorities.  

The members visited Cancer Ward of the General Hospital and distributed underpads surgical gown, and clinical diapers under the supervision of Hospital authorities.

One of our students who was suffering from acute leukemia was given Rs.2.5 Lakhs.

 For HelpAge India, Rs. 1.63 Lakhs was given on January 2016.

Dr. Vijay Menon, Student Mentor used to give inspirational talks in various occasion.

1. KV INS DRONACHARYA has 6th position among 40 KVs out of Ernakulam Region and first position in Defence Sector. Four students of KV INS DRONACHARYA secured centum in Economics of Class XII.
KV INS DRONACHARYA - has 100% Pass in the classes X and XII for the academic year 2017-18.
2. PI of Class XII is 82.03. Aiswarya S Prabhu (Science stream) secured 482/500 i.e 96.4 % and Sai Kripa (Commerce stream) secured 484/500 i.e 96.8 %. Sai Kripa is the regional topper of Ernakulam Region.
3. All 101 Students of Class XII secured more than 60 % marks in aggregate.
